Ubuntu on Windows — The Ubuntu Userspace for Windows Developers
See also Scott Hanselman’s blog here I’m in San Francisco this week, attending Microsoft’s Build developer conference, as a sponsored guest of Microsoft. That’s perhaps a bit odd for me, as I hadn’t used Windows in nearly 1…

  1. Das ist wirklich interessant, und koennte Windows ernsthaft brauchbar (fuer mich) machen. Ich bin auch sehr gespannt was das fuer attraktive Sicherheitsloecher aufreisst.

  2. No, there is no direct access to the underlying device or the hw or the drivers, not even /proc or /sys or full /dev trees exist nor is there any rootfs and commands like 'sudo su -' mean absolutely nothing cause there is no glibc/Linux kernel and none of the modules, but just a 'emulator layer' to Windows NT/XP core system. Remember these are just Ubuntu user space utilities (just a fraction of them actually) nothing else nothing more.. :/

  3. you are correct, looks like I was a little bit overexcited about this news post. Since they are including a package manager (apt) to install additional software from the ubuntu repository, I figured it's more than a set of linux commands… but it looks like I was wrong.

    Quote from Microsoft Blog:
Second, while you’ll be able to run native Bash and many Linux command-line tools on Windows, it’s important to note that this is a developer toolset to help you write and build all your code for all your scenarios and platforms. This is not a server platform upon which you will host websites, run server infrastructure, etc.

  4. Even just the command line utils would make a big difference in possibilities and productivity. But if toolkits like GTK and QT also work (which requires emulating X), that would have a huge impact. And of course you cannot install ALL Ubuntu packages, e.g., the kernel itself and modules don't really make sense…

  5. Never will Microsoft allow that.. This is done to make Linux-kernel and native Linux-distros obsolete in desktop/laptop devices and hw, cause they are only replacing the kernel with Windows/NT exceutive that implements the ELF-binaries system cal and l Linux ABI interface. This is nothing but a disgusting move from Microsoft and won't change a thing cause no developer is going to move from Linux-distros or Macs to Windows because of this.

  6. Incorrect, it is just emulation of X (Xming Server) in which Linux GUI programs perform really bad and is practically useless for any real use. Stop being fanboy of M$ and ..
"don’t jump into this expecting to run your favorite programs as fast as when they are being powered by a Linux operating system." caue this is just M$, in vain, luring developers to their spyware platform, just stay away from this malice 🙂
